(I encountered this constantly in my retail years): People, employees and customers alike, are under the impression that if the register is not told that change is being given back that the register, or the transaction, is somehow off. I doubt I could count how many times a customer insisted I re-ring a transaction because their receipt did not reflect that they had been due the change they received from me. Likewise, I cannot possibly count the number of times your exact situation arose. People just don't get it. You could beat your head against the wall for better results than try to explain that the dollar amount going into the register is the same no matter what.
